What is an energy-monitoring clamp?

An energy-monitoring clamp measures the electrical load passing through a cable without the equipment needing to be connected through a power socket.

Installed on selected single- or three-phase circuits, clamps can monitor energy used by lighting, HVAC, AC condensers, fixed plant and machinery.

Our clamps

Smart meters show how much energy a building uses in total. Smart sockets show what is happening at plug level. But 60% of a typical commercial building's energy consumption is associated with lighting, HVAC and other fixed loads. measurable.energy Clamps fill that gap.

They bring circuit-level data into the measurable.energy platform, alongside data from smart sockets and other monitored appliances. This gives building teams a broader view of where energy is being used—and better evidence for deciding where to act.

Measure the loads that sockets cannot reach

Monitor energy use at the level that is useful for the building or project. Clamps can provide a broad circuit-level view or, where the installation is designed for it, focus on an individual machine or item of equipment.

This can help you investigate:

  • lighting circuits
  • HVAC and air-conditioning equipment
  • fixed electrical plant
  • industrial machinery
  • unexpected or out-of-hours consumption.
Clamps show the energy pattern. They do not automatically identify the cause of inefficient performance.
Measure the impact of every change

Establish a baseline before an intervention, then track the relevant load after the work is complete.
Clamp data can help estates, sustainability and project teams assess the effect of changes such as:

  • replacing or upgrading equipment
  • adjusting operating schedules
  • changing system settings
  • carrying out maintenance
  • or implementing an energy-efficiency measure
Instead of relying only on assumptions or the whole-building total, you can compare the performance of the monitored load over time. Clamps provide measurement, not automatic control. Any result should be assessed in the context of operating conditions and other factors that may have affected consumption.

Installation and specifications

Clamps must be installed by a qualified electrician following an appropriate site assessment. The installation design determines:

  • which circuits and loads are monitored
  • whether measurement is at circuit or individual-equipment level
  • the number and type of clamps required
  • the resulting level of coverage.
